Wat Chaiwatthanaram is a one of the most elegant temple of the Ayutthaya kingdom located on the bank of the Chao Phraya river . It was constructed in 1630 by King Prasat Thong, which was the beginning of the Golden Age of the late-Ayutthaya culture. The temple was used as a Royal temple by the King and other members of the Royal family and it had been the major temple until the end of the kingdom.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram was the landmark temple which best represent the King Prasart Thong’s reign who was one of the greatest king in the Kingdom. The culture, art and style were the religious artifacts to represent the greatness of Ayutthaya Kingdom.The temple has become popular because it  is one of the main locations in the scene of the famous Thai drama series, which depict the history of the old capital of Thailand during the golden period when the temple was in use. This causes the sensation of Thai people to wear Thai traditional costumes and to visit this iconic scenes features in the series

Wat Chaiwatthanaram was built in  the Khmer style following the concepts of the Khmer mountain temples of Angkor to reflect the belief in the universe according to Buddhist and Hindu cosmology. There was a large, central prang in Khmer-style surrounded by smaller prangs, symbolizing Mount Sumeru, the center of the universe and the gods’ mountain according to Hindu belief. The central prang is surrounded by four smaller prangs at each corner, representing the four continents where mankind was born; the courtyard represents the seven oceans and the gallery the seven annular mountain and The outer gallery symbolizes the universe wall. There were 8 stupas around the presiding prang, which were linked by a long gallery. This was the unique architectural style to be found only in this temple. The outside gallery housed the buddha image in Full Regalia, decorated with royal ornaments. This style is popular in the reign of King Prasat Thong. The pagodas located on both side of the ordination hall were built with 12 indented corner which was the popular style in during the late of Ayutthaya period.
